Handmade Wooden Christmas Decor Ideas for the Mantel, Table and Porch

Wooden decor brings warmth that store-bought plastic can't, and it comes back out of the box every December. Here are a few ways we like to put our pieces to work.

Build a layered mantel

Mantels look best with a few different heights. Put the tallest pieces toward the back or the ends, the shorter ones in front, and run some greenery or garland through the gaps.

Graduated pieces do this for you: a set of three wooden candles at 14, 16 and 18 inches tall makes a ready-made layered display, and a mantel-height rustic tree holds its own next to a row of stockings.

Make a statement at the door

One big piece by the front door says Christmas before anyone takes their coat off. A freestanding wooden Santa by the stairs or beside the tree works the same way, and it doesn't need a wall to lean on.

Hang a snowflake on the front door

A large wooden snowflake fills a front door or a porch wall and reads as a snowflake from the street. If it's going outside, pick one with an outdoor clear coat.

Give one ornament the spotlight

A first Christmas ornament, a keepsake from a grandparent, or one in memory of someone you miss deserves better than the back of the tree. A small ornament display on a shelf or desk keeps it in view all season.

Light it safely

Wood and open flames don't mix. Use LED tea lights and battery candles around wooden decor: they give the same warm glow without the risk.
